A Calgary family will have to find a place to live after a garage fire at their home Tuesday morning in Martindale.
CFD was called to a home on Martha’s Meadow Close NE for a fire around 9:30 a.m.
A woman and her child were in the home when the fire started. When smoke alarms went off and alerted her to the fire, she evacuated the home with her young child and three of the four family cats before calling 911.
Firefighters say there was thick, black smoke billowing from the garage when they got there. They started to knock down the blaze and shirt for the fourth cat.
Crews were able to find the missing pet, but despite life-saving efforts, the cat died.
The fire was contained to the home and garage and firefighters were able to prevent it from spreading to neighboring houses, but the damage is extensive enough to force the family–three adults, three kids, and three cats–to find other living arrangements for the time being.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
