Alberta identifies 59 new Omicron cases, active infections continue climb

In just one day, Alberta has nearly doubled the total number of Omicron cases seen to date in the province.
On Thursday afternoon, 59 new cases of the variant were reported in Alberta bringing the total number of cases of that variant to 119 in the province.

Meanwhile, the province reported a total of 473 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. The new case numbers come after nearly 96,000 tests for a positivity rate of around 4.9 per cent.
Active infections also continue to climb after weeks of declining numbers.
There are now 4,212 active cases in Alberta — an increase of 130 cases from the day prior.

As for hospitalizations, there are now 352 people in hospital, 70 of which are in the ICU.
Alberta Health also reporting no new deaths over the last day. In fact, one previous death that was listed as COVID-19 related was removed from the total tally after it was determined COVID was not a cause.
On the vaccination front, 1,785 kids aged five to 11 received their first dose of COVID vaccine over the last day. To date, nearly 97,00 kids have received their shot — making up about 24.7 per cent of that population.
As for those 12 and older, 89.4 per cent have one dose of COVID vaccine, while 85 per cent are fully immunized.
In total, more than 7.22 million doses have been administered to date in Alberta.
