Alberta reports nearly 900 new Omicron cases, active infections jump by more than 1,200

It was one of the worst weekends seen in several months when it comes to Alberta’s fight against COVID-19.
Since Friday, the province has identified nearly 2,000 new cases of COVID-19. Of those new infections, 872 are the new Omicron variant.

To date, Alberta has now reported 1,045 cases of the Omicron variant.
As for the weekend breakdown of new infections, it goes as follows:
- 577 new cases identified on Friday
- 721 new cases identified on Saturday
- 627 new cases identified on Sunday
There are now 5,652 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — a jump of more than 1,200 cases from Friday’s report.
As for severe outcomes of COVID-19, there are now 324 people in hospital, 69 of which are in the ICU.
Meanwhile, Alberta Health is reporting six more people died from COVID-19 over the weekend.

On the vaccination front, more than 9,000 kids aged five to 11 received their COVID vaccine over the weekend.
Now, more than 107,000 kids in that demographic have received their first COVID vaccine — or about 27.5 per cent of that age group.
As for the rest of the population, 89.5 per cent have received at least one shot, while 85.2 per cent are fully immunized.
