Two men in their 20s are facing a number of charges, including aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, in connection with a series of stabbings in Calgary, all of which are believed to be random.
Police say three people were sprayed with a fire extinguisher and then stabbed early last Tuesday along the CTrain line downtown.
The first incident happened near the LRT platform at 7 Avenue and 4 Street SW around 4 a.m., police say. The person was stabbed in the lower back and was seriously hurt.
The second attack happened in a bus shelter in the same area. Police say a man was sleeping when he was sprayed and then stabbed in the stomach. This victim was also seriously hurt.
The final attack happened at the station at 7 Avenue and 7 Street SW. According to investigators, a man was leaving a CTrain and was stabbed in the lower back and rib cage after he, too, was sprayed with a fire extinguisher. Once again, the victim was seriously hurt.
All of the people hurt were able to find help and be taken to hospital. They are all said to be in stable condition.
“We will not tolerate this kind of violence within our city,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Jacobs.
Investigators say they were able to use high-quality transit video to help identify suspects.
During a search of a home along 7 Avenue SW, the two men were arrested and a series of items, including knives, bear spray, brass knuckles, small quantities of various drugs, and a sawed off .22 caliber riffle, were seized.
The 21-year-old suspect is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of breach of probation, and one count of breach of a release order.
The 29-year-old suspect is also charged with three counts each of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon, and one count each of careless storage of a firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unlicensed weapon, no registration of a firearm, and possession of a restricted weapon.
The two men are scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, Jan. 4
