Alberta nears 5,000 daily COVID infections as active infections, positivity rates spike

    Alberta is once again breaking records when it comes to daily COVID-19 infections.

    On Wednesday, Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced the province identified more than 4,700 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours.

    The new case numbers come after more than 12,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 36.9 per cent.

    Meanwhile, there are now at least 37,196 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — a jump of nearly 3,000 cases from Tuesday.

    All of these numbers are new records for the province.

    As for severe outcomes, there are now 470 people in hospital with COVID-19, a jump of 34 patients from the day prior. Of those in hospital, 72 are in the ICU.

    Hinshaw also reporting 11 more people died with COVID-19 over the last day.

    On the vaccination front, 89.4 per cent of Albertans 12 and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose, while 85.3 per cent have received two shots.

    To date, more than 7.76 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Alberta.
