Active COVID infections decline for second straight day in Alberta

Alberta saw another day of declining COVID-19 case numbers Wednesday despite thousands of new infections being reported.
Over the last 24 hours, 3,837 new cases were identified in Alberta. The new case numbers come after more than 10,000 tests were completed for a positivity rate of around 38 per cent.
There are now 67,534 active cases of COVID-19 in Alberta — a decrease of nearly 2,700 cases from Tuesday’s update.

There are now 1,101 people in hospital with COVID-19, a rise of 12 patients from the day prior. Of those in hospital, 108 are in the ICU.
As for the most severe outcome, Alberta Health reported one additional COVID-19 death has been added to the provincial tally.
Despite just one death being added, Dr. Deena Hinshaw says there were six new deaths over the last day.

On Twitter, Hinshaw dove deeper into hospitalization numbers from the last week.
She says 55.1 per cent of non-ICU admissions are due to COVID and 44.9 per cent are cases where infection was not determined to be a cause of admission.
“For ICU, 69.8 per cent of new admissions were due to COVID & 30.2 per cent were incidental infections/unclear,” she said in a tweet.

As for vaccination in Alberta, the province has now administered more than 8.1 million doses of COVID vaccine.
Of the entire Alberta population, 80.2 per cent have received one dose, while 73.6 per cent have two doses.
To date, nearly 30 per cent of the entire population has received their booster shot.
