Dust storm in southern Alberta shuts down part of Highway 3

A section of Highway 3 has been closed because of a dust storm.

Alberta’s emergency alert website issued the closure notice around 1:45 p.m. Monday, saying strong winds are picking up dust and sand, reducing visibility along the highway between Coaldale and Taber, east of Lethbridge.

RCMP officers are responding to multiple crashes on that section of the road.

Wind warnings are also in place for the area.

Environment Canada says gusts of up to 110 kilometres per hour are possible in some parts through the afternoon.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area for the time being, until conditions improve.
