Calgary Stampede chuckwagon races coming back summer 2022

An exciting day for chuckwagon fans, as the Calgary stampede announces their return this July. As Jasmine Vickaryous reports, the Stampede and races can be an indicator of the health of Calgary’s economy.

A Calgary cult classic and one of the most popular events of the Calgary Stampede is making a coveted comeback this summer.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the chuckwagons will be back racing in early July. The Calgary Stampede is bringing back the Canvas Auction, where companies can bid on the rights to advertise on the back of a of a chuckwagon for the 10 days of the rangeland derby.

The Stampede’s Kristina Barnes says the way companies advertise at the chucks has changed over the years.

“So, in the past, we’ve seen some companies want a full 10 days of advertising, some will only now want one or two so there is the option to look to find partners.”

The Stampede had cancelled the auction for the 2021 races due to uncertainty related to the pandemic.

“We do know that the support the drivers received through the auction is vital to supporting the teams not just in Calgary at the Stampede, but throughout their whole racing season. So, it’s a very important initiative [we] are super excited to have it back.”

This year’s auction is set for Apr.12 at the Big Four Roadhouse on Stampede Park.
