Certain baby formula products have been recalled over bacterial contamination worries.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Abbott is pulling some of its Similac powder products because of the possible presence of Cronobacter sakazakii and salmonella.
The recall notice says the potential contamination poses a “hazardous risk” to those who consume the formula.
Affected products include the following, though a complete list can be found here.
- Similac Advance Step 1 Milk-Based Iron-Fortified Infant Formula Powder

Salyn Hansen is a mother of three who says she was among the people to buy one of the affected products. She tells CityNews one of her kids, who was on one of the Abbott-brand formula products for two and a half weeks, has been sick for days, showing symptoms of irritability, inconsolable crying, abnormal body movements, diarrhea, and fever.
“I’m not the only mom who has been feeling the effect of this product, whether your child was sick or not,” she said. “Also, the amount of formula pulled from the shelves, now there’s a lack of supply for other mothers. We don’t know where to turn most of the time.”
She says she was surprised to learn about this contamination recall, given how popular the Similac brand has been for her and other parents.

“[It’s] actually a very scary thing to find in your baby formula since you as a person cannot provide this nutrition for your baby,” she said. “So you’re relying on … a very well-known company like Similac to provide the nutrition and health that you need to give to your child.”
Hansen is hoping to reach other families by sharing her story.
