Icy conditions lead to crashes on Calgary roads

Icy conditions led to dozens of crashes on Calgary roads Wednesday morning.

According to CPS, there were 75 collisions reported between midnight and 10 a.m. Police note people were hurt in eight of those crashes.

Chris McGeachy with the City of Calgary’s roads department is urging people to be careful out there.

“The snow vent has also brought with it extremely low temperatures right now our crews are focused on our seven-day plan,” he explained.

“But we just want to remind people, particularly before the sun has come out and after it has gone down there could be some icy sections out there so bridge decks and hills and you know even in intersections.”

McGeachy says crews are laying down a pickling mixture that will hopefully improve traction.

Things could change in the coming days, with temperatures in the forecast set to rise.

“Anticipating quite a bit of warming here in the next couple of days and that should help,” said McGeachy.

“The best thing you should do is to take plenty of time to get to where you need to go and leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in the front and just make sure you are prepared before heading out on those roads.”
