Canmore Nordic Centre to receive $17.5M investment from Alberta for renovation

The Alberta government announced it is investing $17.5 million over the next two years to support upgrades and enhancements to the Canmore Nordic Centre.

Premier Jason Kenney says this funding will bring more people to the mountain town.

The investment is expected to create up to 90 jobs and support upgrades to the biathlon facilities and trails, snow-making and storage facilities, and off-season training capabilities.

“We are making sure that Albertans will always have access to this little slice of winter wonderland while still attracting international tourists right here to Canmore,” said Kenney.

This funding is on top of the money from the Kananaskis Conservation Pass, which has generated $12 million since its introduction last summer.

The province says this revenue will be reinvested to provide visitor services, hire staff and groom winter trails.

Kenney says the upgrades will ensure Canmore remains a world-class destination.

“Visitors from around the world come here to train and explore while taking in the magnificent landscapes of the Alberta Rocky Mountains.”

“And at the same time, Albertans come here to participate in year-round outdoor recreation opportunities like obviously cross-country skiing but also hiking, mountain biking, trail running and so much more,” he said.

The Canmore Nordic Centre was originally built to host the cross-country events for the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Since then it has hosted a wide range of cross-country skiing events.

Previously, a $25 million refurbishment of the Nordic Centre was funded by the Government of Alberta. It was completed in early 2008 and allowed the facility to hold international biathlon and cross-country events.
