Calgary Humane Society’s Protection and Investigation Department is looking to speak with the owner of a female Shih-Tzu type dog after it was found in “horrific condition.”
In a release, the Humane Society says the senior dog was “severely matted, soaked with urine and feces, and nails overgrown and curled into the pads of her feet.”
It all happened in the early morning of Sunday, March 20, when a passerby found the Shih-Tzu while travelling along 32 Avenue NE, West of Deerfoot Trail, near the bus depot, between 9 St and 36 Ave NE.
The good Samaritan who found the dog immediately took it to an emergency veterinary clinic where it was de-matted. The vet then got in touch with the Humane Society about the neglected animal where it was transferred for further treatment.
Upon examination at the Humane Society, it was determined that the dog was suffering from pyometra, which is an infected uterus, and can, if left untreated, be fatal.
“In my many years doing this work, I have never seen matting to this degree of severity,” said Brad Nichols, Director of Operations and Enforcement with the Humane Society.
“This condition did not develop overnight. This was many months, possibly years of reckless, criminal neglect. This dog was incredibly lucky to have strayed and been found by this good Samaritan, as ultimately she got the care that she desperately needed to survive.”
If you have any information about what happened to this dog, call the Calgary Humane Society at 403-205-4455 or report it online.
