The province is nearly doubling its funding contribution to Stars Air Ambulance (STARS).
Alberta is providing $8 million in additional funding to help support STARS.
STARS stands for shock trauma air rescue service.

Health Minister Jason Copping says the money is important because of where and how often STARS is used.
“This is good news for all communities across the province that STARS serves. In fact, STARS cover 90 per cent of Alberta’s population, including vast parts of our rural and remote areas,” said Copping.
Alberta’s 2022 budget includes $64 million in additional funding for EMS, including $28 million in support for ground and helicopter air ambulance services.

President of STARS Andrea Robertson says the $8 million in additional funding will enable them to focus on strengthening critical care across the province.
“We often say the red helicopter is the most visible aspect of the care we provide,” said Robertson. “But the real magic is what happens inside. It’s absolutely about critical care trained crews (and) bringing the best technology and medical care available.”
STARS has been around for more than 30 years. The non-profit service provides specialized emergency care and transportation for critically ill and injured patients.
