A church in southwest Calgary is believed to have been the target of a hate crime, according to police.
Sometime last weekend, from 9 a.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Sunday, Scarboro United Church along Scarboro Avenue had their LGBTQ2S+ Pride Flag and welcoming message vandalized with the word “repent.”
Police say there are also cut and burn marks on the flag, leading them to believe this was a hate crime.
“It appears that the damage to the church’s banner and welcoming message to all individuals was motivated towards the LGBTQ2S+ community, and we continue to investigate this incident,” said Sgt. Matt Messenger of the Hate Crime and Extremism Team with the Calgary Police Service.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them at 403-266-1234.
