Calgary Flames forward Sean Monahan placed on long-term injury leave

The Calgary Flames will have to play the remainder of their season without forward Sean Monahan, who’s been placed on long-term injured reserve ahead of season-ending hip surgery.

Flames general manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media Saturday morning and shared the bad news for Flames fans.

Treliving says this was not an issue that was plaguing Monahan but it’s something that cropped up in the last couple of days.

“Sean is one who plays through a lot of stuff without telling a lot of people. I think Sean’s faced a lot of criticism,” said Treliving.

“And for people to challenge or question him I think is wrong. Most people out there couldn’t play through a third of what he has. And he keeps it to himself.”

Treliving says Monahan has until the start of next season to recover.

“He had his other hip, his left hip done last year and it’s great, he’s doing wonderful with it,” said the team’s GM.

“This is now the next challenge for him. So he’s got a lot of time to get it addressed before next year. But no question: a great deal of disappointment.”

The Flames are trying to break out of a two-game losing streak. Puck drop is at 8 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
