A grass fire just south of Airdrie resulted in nearby residents being evacuated from their homes on Monday afternoon.
The fire, which initially wasn’t of significant concern, grew as wind blew through the prairie fields between Calgary and Airdrie.
Traffic was also closed in the area for a brief part of the afternoon as heavy smoke blew across the QEII, but as the smoke cleared up, so did the traffic.
NB QE2 is OPEN.
The earlier grass fires between Balzac & Airdrie have been extinguished, but traffic remains 'quite heavy in each direction'.There is another fire burning north of Airdrie near Highway 2-A that is creating some distractions.#ABRoads #yyctraffic pic.twitter.com/y06kGz1oKU

There were some further concerns raised about a pair of propane tanks in the area and the proximity they were to the fire.
It isn’t known at this time if the fire reached the tanks, but RCMP say they are continuing to monitor the situation.
