Indigenous art exhibition ‘This Land is Home’ opens at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

The Land is Home project, a year-long rotating art exhibit at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary launched its first display on Friday.

The art showcase is a celebration of our connection to the land through the work of nine different Indigenous artists.

Jessica McMann, Indigenous Curator for the City of Calgary says just as different birds migrate to the sanctuary through the seasons, customers can expect the art to change as well.

“There are so many returning customers and visitors to the center,” McMann said. “So when they come back each season to see the birds that are migrating and departing, they will be able to see different art at the same time.”

The exhibition series features a range of art forms including sound installations, painting, cultural arts, and poetry. Henry HeavyShield is a poet and writer who says his work comes from the land.

“It’s really humbling,” HeavyShield said. “It’s an honour to share something small with people, and see people respond to it.”

The exhibit was created to help enhance the understanding of Indigenous connections to the land during different seasons.

Another artist featured in the exhibit, Tara Manyfingers, says her work comes from her heart.

“I did this to honour my mother and she loves hummingbirds,” Manyfingers said. “Who doesn’t love the hummingbird? It’s a beautiful creature.”

The spring exhibit with the work of Manyfingers and HeavySheild will be on display at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary until mid-June.
