A local theatre company says it’s using sound to help Calgarians heal from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Great Alberta Sound Bath Experience is a Calgary production in the works from the Ghost River Theatre using what it calls immersive meditative sound.
“[It’s] basically using different vibrations of music and sound to heal the body,” said Eric Rose with the theatre.
The Great Alberta Sound Bath Experience workshop premieres at the @WestVTheatre on April 15 at 7:30 p.m. The experience will take listeners on a sonic adventure of epic proportions – both cleansing and meditating. Rose says he’s interested in how people will come together now that local pandemic restrictions are all but gone.
COVID-19 pandemic effects range from not having been in a crowd for years to an example Rose uses; the major political polarization that Calgarians felt during the Beltline protests against pandemic restrictions.
“And I feel like one of the most difficult things is that we don’t have platforms to gather as a group, as a community,” Rose said. “And to understand each other in different ways.”

The Ghost River Theatre is hoping a diverse crowd will come out to the workshop experience to give feedback. The plan is to adapt the piece further to be ready for next summer.
“We’re welcoming people to come,” Rose said. “They can bring a mat, they can lie down, and again, just let the music wash over them.”
