Calgary street sweeping begins, locals reminded to move cars

Street sweeping across Calgary begins Monday.

The city is reminding residents to move their vehicles to allow the cleanup to take place and to do so by checking the schedule to figure out when your street will be tackled.

The process removes sanding materials and other debris that’s accumulated on local roadways over the winter months.

“Sweeping reduces water pollution by preventing the run-off of sanding materials into our stormwater system and reduces air pollution,” the City of Calgary says on its website.

It notes sweeping also allows locals to use the city’s infrastructure with more flexibility and gives people room to distance themselves from others, if needed.

More than 16,000 lane kilometres of Calgary’s roads are cleaned during the program. In addition to removing vehicles, residents are also reminded to move their green, black, and green carts if sweeping is taking place on collection day.

Typically, the city says parking bans are in place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Vehicles that remain on a street that’s scheduled for cleaning, with signage up, may be towed.
