Spring cleaning: Calgary annual community cleanup returns

Got a bunch of junk you need to get rid of?

You can probably take a lot of it to the community cleanup starting this weekend.

The annual community cleanup partners with community associations to help dispose of unwanted household items and waste that may not be suitable for the black cart, according to the City of Calgary.

On average, community cleanups result in at least the removal of over one million kilograms of waste and organic material, says the city.

This initiative is available to all Calgarians regardless of the community they reside in and is a recurring event every Saturday and Sunday until September.

City of Calgary inspector, Bradley Johnson, says it makes cleanup easy and helps reduce illegal dumping.

“This gives an option for citizens to drop off household materials like mattresses, sofas, furniture of all kinds, waste materials that maybe to get to a landfill that is too far of a drive where they do not have a vehicle to access that kind of stuff. You know it gives them this closer option within communities to drop off the materials for free,” said Johnson.

Accepted materials include furniture desks, chairs, sofas, old mattresses, toilets, barbecues, lawnmowers, household chemicals, and large appliances, and recalled or broken recreation products.

You can check out the City of Calgary’s website for a community cleanup near you from now until the end of June. It will be back in the fall.
