Calgary fire crews battle flames in pile of rubble at Quarry Park landfill

Fire crews and EMS first responders have been battling a blaze that erupted Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning at a southeast Calgary landfill.

Firefighters responded to multiple calls regarding a smoke plume in the southeast community of Quarry Park on Friday around 8:10 pm.

Upon arrival, fire crews found large amounts of smoke at a large pile of rubble in a landfill. The staff on-site were using a large bulldozer to extinguish the fire. Crews say the machinery was also overcome by the flames.

The machine’s operator was able to exit the vehicle unharmed but the fire continued to engulf the surroundings. Fire crews intervened with a remote water supply and hose streams.

Both Calgary fire and landfill staff continued to work on the blaze throughout the night to contain the fire in the single pile of rubbish. The landfill consists of construction waste and dry rubble.

Water supply remained a challenge as the closest hydrant was at least one kilometre from the fire.

Calgary police, CP Rail, and Alberta Environment were all in attendance at the scene of the incident. Firefighters will remain in the area until the fire is under control.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The public is asked to avoid the area for the next 24 hours.
