Fire at SAIT campus prompts evacuation from Calgary firefighters

A four-story building on the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) campus was evacuated Friday morning after a fire broke out in one of the instructional areas on the second floor.

Emergency crews were on scene at the 1300 block of 16th avenue northwest around 11 a.m. where they found large volumes of smoke and near-zero visibility in the welding shop area.

Firefighters were able to locate the fire in an air filtration unit and were able to bring the blaze under control.

No one was injured during the event and crews remain on the scene for an investigation.

The entire building is expected to be shut down for at least the next 24 hours as crews investigate.
