Alberta recognizes National Child and Youth Mental Health Day

Saturday is “National Child and Youth Mental Health Day” across Canada.

The goal of the day is to break down the stigma attached to mental health challenges and barriers faced by young people, according to Wood’s Homes, a non-profit children’s mental health centre based in Calgary.

The day also raises awareness on the resources available for youth who are looking for treatment and support for mental health needs and to build healthier relationships.

“Children and youth are resilient, and that resiliency needs to be developed and nurtured,” said Minister of Children’s Services Rebecca Schulz and Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Mike Ellis in a joint statement. “One of the best things we can do is make time to talk with and listen to the young people in our lives and support them to build resilience and improve their mental health.

“For some young people, improving their mental health can be as simple as taking small steps towards wellness like being active, eating healthy, getting enough sleep or building healthy social connections.

“For others, improving their mental health can be a challenge that requires a community of support.

“Today and every day is an opportunity for us all to support the children and youth in our lives to build their resiliency and improve their mental health.”

For those looking for resources on mental health, there are services such as Kids Help Phone and 211 Alberta which provides advice for caregivers, families and professionals on supporting children and youth with mental-health concerns.
