An incident that is being described by Calgary police as a “road rage shooting” Tuesday has left an innocent woman dead and a man hurt.
According to CPS, multiple vehicles crashed and gunshots rang out in the Forest Lawn area of 17 Avenue SE and 36 Street SE around 11 p.m.
Two vehicles, a red Chevrolet Silverado and a grey Volkswagen Jetta, were chasing each other down southbound 36 Street with the people inside firing at each other. When they got to the intersection of 17 Avenue, the Silverado struck a silver van that was trying to make a turn.
The collision sent the van careening into a nearby parking lot, while the occupants in the other vehicles got out and continued shooting.
A man and a woman who were in the truck fled the scene on foot, while the man in the Jetta suffered gunshot wounds and was eventually taken to hospital.
Amid the carnage, a 40-year-old woman in the van was severely injured and died at the scene. It is unclear at this time if she died from gunshot wounds or a result of the collision, and an autopsy will be performed.
Another vehicle was also hit, but the driver was not hurt.

The scene forced a lengthy closure in the area, and it eventually reopened at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Police are now asking for help finding the two people who were in the truck.
“This reckless behaviour has no room on our city’s streets,” said Superintendent Scott Boyd with the Calgary Police Service. “The actions and behaviour of these individuals led to the death of a woman we believe to be completely innocent in this matter. A woman who will now be mourned by her family and friends, and it breaks our heart to think about.”
Police will not say at this time if the incident is gang-related, instead only calling it a “disturbing road rage incident.” The investigation is ongoing, including speaking to the other man who was injured, to determine any links between him and the other suspects as well as connections to organized crime.

Calgary police are looking for a man and woman who were in a red Chevrolet Silverado during a car chase and shooting that left an innocent woman dead in Forest Lawn on May 10, 2021.
In the meantime, it is a priority for police to find the suspects who fled the area.
“These people went back to their community, they went back after what any of us could describe as a horrific event. They went, I believe, somewhere they feel safe. Usually those settings come with other people that they would confide in. I would say it is imperative on those people to come forward and share what they know about what’s taken place,” Boyd added.
It is believed there were many more witnesses to the incident, and police call on them to come forward with more information and video, such as dashcam footage from other vehicles.
Police also could not disclose what sort of weapons were used in the incident, but it is continuing with a disturbing trend we have seen in the city this year.
“This is the 58th shooting incident that has taken place on city streets, it is absolutely a critical concern for us,” Boyd said. “There’s no room for any of this gun violence playing out on our streets.”
