Wings Over Springbank Airshow returns west of Calgary in July

The Wings Over Springbank Airshow is coming back to skies just west of Calgary in July, making an anticipated return after being cancelled last year. The aviation showcase is set for July 23 and 24 at the Springbank Airport after it was cancelled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The airshow, which happens every other year, brings North America’s top pilots to southern Alberta, including The Canadian Forces Snowbirds’ and the newly formed Northern Stars.

One of the Snowbirds’ pilots is a Calgary Flames fan, and made a bold prediction about the team’s chances in the Stanley Cup playoffs this year.

“Our team is thrilled to return to the Wings Over Springbank Airshow for 2022,” said Maj. Steve “Stu” Hurlbut, Snowbird 9 pilot. “Being from Calgary myself, I am excited to perform in front of my community. I can imagine flying for a crowd already pumped from winning the cup!”

The Canadian Forces F18 Demo Team will also be showing off their titular fighter jet.

“Wings Over Springbank Airshow is elated to once again bring families, friends and aviation enthusiasts together safely to celebrate the art of flight,” said Sarah van Gilst, chair and show producer, Wings Over Springbank Airshow. “This year’s airshow is a celebration of the return of events and, more importantly, community connection. We can’t wait for attendees to see the world-class performers take flight.”

Wings Over Springbank is a volunteer-driven non-profit, which is run by enthusiasts from the aviation community. Brent Handy, leader of the Northern Stars, is described as an “airshow legend” by the Wings Over Springbank Airshow, he has nothing but praise for the southern Alberta event.

“I’m extremely excited to be returning to the skies over Springbank again in 2022! The Wings Over Springbank Airshow has long been a favourite venue as a performer,” said Handy. “The all-volunteer crew does an amazing job hosting both performers and fans, showing wonderful Alberta hospitality. I’m especially excited to introduce our new formation aerobatic team — the Northern Stars — to Springbank. Our all-veteran team will fly three Pitts Special biplanes in exciting formations, showcasing the skill and precision that was bred into us as military pilots.”

The Springbank Airport has been home to the Wings Over Springbank Airshow since 2015.

This year’s show will have food and beverage vendors, a beer garden, and activities for families.
