Alberta legislature Spring session ends as former UCP leader Jason Kenney resigns

The Spring session of the legislature that saw premier Jason Kenney announce his resignation ends today.

The opposition NDP calls it a total failure, filled with party infighting that culminated with Kenney’s announcement last week that he’ll step down when the UCP chooses a new leader.

Government house leader Jason Nixon says they are ending earlier than usual because there’s nothing more to do.

Nixon adds there are no more pieces of legislation to pass.

“Frankly, I’m out of legislation today. There are two other bills that will remain on the order paper that still need work that I don’t think can get done in time,” said Nixon.

Nixon shot down claims from reporters that they are ending early so cabinet ministers and MLAs that want to run for the leadership can start campaigning.

NDP house leader Christina Gray recapped the last 13 weeks.

“This session has been a total failure for the UCP. They’ve been entirely engrossed in their own internal drama and they have failed to address the single most important issue facing Albertans today. And that issue is of course the monthly bills that Albertans are struggling to pay,” said Gray.

The government did pass legislation allowing for a total of $150 dollars in rebates for power bills, but it is still not known when Albertans will actually receive that money.
