Alberta to allow dog-friendly patios with some exceptions

It’ll be easier to grab a beer with fido. If you enjoy bringing your dog along to patios you’ll likely have more options this summer.

The province says restaurants, bars, and coffee shops no longer need approval from a public health inspector from Alberta Health Services (AHS) to allow pooches on patios.

“Other jurisdictions have allowed dogs on patios without compromising food safety. This change is long overdue and will let AHS public health inspectors focus their efforts where they are needed most – supporting restaurants, providing advice and making sure public health requirements are followed,” said Jason Copping, Alberta Minister of Health.

The changes take effect immediately however there are a couple of rules.

For example, dogs must be on a leash or in a carrier on a patio and be well-behaved. And you can’t bring your furry friend into any indoor food handling areas like dining rooms or kitchens.

“AHS is supportive of dog-friendly patios as long as it’s being done in a safe manner. We will continue to be available to restaurant owners and Albertans to provide guidance and support in the establishment and maintenance of dog-friendly patios as needed,” said Dr. Laura McDougall, senior medical officer of health at Alberta Health Services.
