Right on time: Calgary Marathon recovers medals for runners at the finish line

Participants in Calgary’s marathon were able to receive their medals after all.

Just hours before runners hit the finish line for the 2022 Calgary Marathon Sunday, the medals were delivered to organizers.

This came after Kirsten Fleming, the organizer of the marathon, received disappointing news when she was told the medals were trapped in a container at a port in Vancouver early last week.

However, in an Instagram post, Calgary Marathon says “planes, trucks, ships,” and the “cooperation of hundreds of people in two countries, three time zones, and five organizations” were able to work together to get the medals to Stampede Park just hours before runners crossed the line.

“Incredible thanks goes out to Global Container Terminals Canada and Westjet, who worked together to get the goods on Flight 128 from Vancouver just after midnight, and delivered the 7,140 medals to the finish chute at Stampede Park six hours before the start of the race,” the Calgary Marathon post reads, in part.

Fleming had mentioned that everyone who crosses the finish line, from kids to those who run 50 kilometers, normally gets a medal.
