Kevin Costner is the 2022 Calgary Stampede parade marshal

The parade marshal for the 2022 Calgary Stampede is a big name in Hollywood.

“Field of Dreams” and “The Untouchables” star Kevin Costner has been chosen to lead this year’s parade and kick off the 10-day event in July.

Calgary Stampede says the role goes to someone who “exemplifies western culture and tradition.”

Stampede communications manager Kristin Anderson tells Breakfast with Billie Jo and Candace on Star 95.9 that Costner is a perfect fit.

“Obviously there was a natural tie with his involvement in different types of Western movies and TV shows,” Anderson said. “So fitting, and he was so excited and thrilled to come and join us.”

Costner currently stars in the popular series “Yellowstone,” a modern-day western filmed in Montana which is in its fifth season.

Anderson also says it was a team effort to land the award-winning actor and director as this year’s guest.

“It wasn’t me just hopping down to Montana chatting with him, I have to give credit to our president and chairman, Steve McDonough,” Anderson said. “Just such an exciting day — and it’s going to be a wonderful Stampede this year.”

Costner adds he was honoured to be chosen.

“I have a lot of fond memories of being in Calgary. It’s made a big difference to me in my life to make ‘Open Range’ there and ‘Let Him Go.’ It’s one of the beautiful spots,” Costner said. “The world kind of focuses on Calgary — this thing that started a long time ago.”
