High winds knock out power to hundreds in Calgary northwest

Some strange weather passed through northwest Calgary Thursday afternoon.

People in the area said high winds whipped through around the Northwest Auto Mall around 2:30 p.m.

“It went through the lot at Charlesglen Toyota. It lifted some of the tents, flipped them right over and destroyed some of the others. And the fireman just said all the power lines were knocked down and the area is unsafe,” said Jeff, who works in the area.

“I don’t know what you call it, a funnel cloud or whatever. But it sure was powerful enough to lift tents up in the air and tip them over,” he added.

The nasty winds knocked out some power for a while. Enmax has confirmed power outages around Citadel, Royal Vista, and Sherwood, among other areas.

More than 1,100 customers were affected, with power set to be restored later in the day.
