Calgary bird lovers are now allowed to become licensed pigeon owners

Sure you can have a dog or a cat as a pet but how about a pigeon?
Calgarians can now apply to keep pigeons as pets.
It’s part of the Urban Livestock program in the city which also allows you to keep hens and bees in your backyard.

The birds, callously referred to as sky rats, are actually quite smart and easy-going and quickly learn household routines and typically get along with dogs and cats.
Palomacy, a Pigeon rescue organization, says the birds are very emotional and need a best friend, whether it be another bird or a human who they can spend the day with.

There are some rules to qualify for a license to own the birds.
This includes being a member in one of two local pigeon associations in the city where you can get information about how to care for them, be at least 18 years old, and submit a thorough plan of how you will keep the pigeons.
And you may not have been aware, but Calgarians have been keeping pigeons for over a century. But these rules will ensure neighbouring concerns are addressed.
