Alberta animal rescue group overwhelmed by dogs and cats in rural areas, raising funds

Fido needs your help.

The Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) is out with an urgent plea due to a booming pet population in rural and remote communities.

According to the organization, due to the pandemic and the halting of animal wellness programs, they’re looking after hundreds of dogs.

The dogs are at risk of distemper – a disease that can be fatal in animals without vaccines.

The organization says it is also caring for more than 450 cats and is looking for donations of canned food.

A spokesperson says a large number of those cats are moms with litters.

The organization is fundraising in the next two weeks, hoping to raise between $15,000 and $20,000.

AARCS says Albertans can also help by making sure their pets are up to date on their vaccines. The group also hopes some families will consider opening their home to one of the many dogs currently in quarantine.
