Alberta honours National Indigenous People’s Day

June is National Indigenous History Month and Albertans are encouraged to partake in events being held around the province.

Alberta is celebrating National Indigenous People’s Day to raise awareness of Indigenous cultures and histories.

In a public ceremony that took place earlier Saturday afternoon hosted by Lt.-Gov. Salma Lakhani, Premier Jason Kenney, Minister of Indigenous Relations Rick Wilson, and Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi showcased Indigenous performances, stories, and food.

According to a provincial release, Indigenous People are an integral part of Alberta’s history and culture and this event was a chance to learn more about their rich traditions, art, and history.

“Every effort made, big or small, in learning more about Indigenous people is an act of reconciliation. The more we connect, the more our understanding of each other grows and strengthens the foundation for a better future for all,” said Rick Wilson, Minister of Indigenous Relations.

The ceremony proceeded with a blessing by the Elder Bert Auger including drumming by Mountain Cree, performances by Inuk-knowledge-keeper Goota Desmarais and her partner Alaina Aggart, and lastly the Métis Child and Family Dancers.
