Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek banned from Russia

Hopefully Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek didn’t have a Russian vacation in her plans this summer.

The first-term mayor has been banned from the country in retaliation to Canadian sanctions against Russian diplomats and companies amid the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Gondek is one of the 43 Canadians named in a list of people sanctioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

“I made the list. I’m number 27 on this list of who can’t go to Russia, so congratulations to me,” she said Monday, adding, “not bothered at all.”

The list is comprised of Canadian federal and regional officials, including former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, Conservative Party strategist Jenni Byrne, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former advisor Gerald Butts.
