Jewish inmates in Alberta will have access to Kosher food

By Danina Falkenberg

Kosher food will now be an option for Jewish inmates in Alberta correctional facilities after years of efforts by various stakeholders. including the director of Chabad Lubavitch of Edmonton Rabbi Ari-Drelich.

“We’re actually following in the footsteps of the federal government which has already been offering Kosher meals throughout the federal system throughout Canada,” said Ari-Drelich.

Ari-Drelich says some other provinces already offer Kosher meals in their correctional facilities. He adds he does know of instances where an inmate was allowed Kosher food to come in for the Jewish holiday of Passover.

“But it was a band-aid, it was a patch, it was a one-time situation, but obviously not a solution to the much bigger problem,” Ari-Drelich said.
