Calgary Heritage Day long weekend: Things to do

Calgary is in for some hot weather throughout the Heritage Day long weekend, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go out and enjoy your days off.
There are events and things to do in and around the city during the extended break, and some won’t cost you a penny.
Friday, July 29
- The Calgary Zoo is hosting ZooNights Friday and Saturday, keeping the zoo open later so you can see the animals until 8 p.m.
- An hour outside Calgary you can take part in Nanton Roundup Days, which runs until Monday.
- Loud as Hell Festival runs until Sunday in Drumheller.
- Randy Houser with Special Guest Brandon Lorenzo is playing at the Grey Eagle Event Centre.
- Calgary Fringe Festival brings uncensored theatre to the Festival Hall from Friday to Saturday, August 6.
- Strathmore Stampede starts Friday and goes until Monday and has all the rodeo fixtures you’re used to.
- The Alberta Kennel Club is hosting its Summer Classic dog show at Spruce Meadows from Friday to Monday.
Saturday, July 30
- Inglewood Sunfest is happening all day, featuring street shows and over 200 vendors.
- The Canmore Folk Festival starts Saturday and runs until Monday.
- Chasing Summer Festival is on both Saturday and Sunday at the Max Bell Centre Grounds.
- The first ever Granary Road Pickle Palooza offers free admission to its farmer’s market all weekend and you can enter a pickle eating and brine chugging contest.
- St. Mary’s Malankara Orthodox Church Calgary is hosting its free Summer Fun Fair to raise money for the construction of a new church.
- Shinedown is performing at the Grey Eagle Event Centre with special guests Pop Evil and Ayron Jones.
- Play On! Canada’s largest street hockey festival will be held in the Marda Loop business district on Saturday and Sunday.
- The Calgary Night Market is back on at the Bridgeland Riverside Community Association, and it’s free.
STREET HOCKEY Festival has taken over Marda Loop in SW Calgary. Road restrictions will be in place through 10pm Sunday night.

- The Calgary Stampeders take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at McMahon Stadium, kickoff is at 5 p.m.
- Cavalry FC host FC Edmonton at Spruce Meadows, the game gets underway at 4 p.m.
- You can watch the Tour de Bowness bicycle race in Horse Creek just outside of Cochrane.
- If you feel like taking a drive to Didsbury you can take part in the Days of Yore history festival, put on by the Mountainview Art Society.
- The Vietnamese heritage festival Vietnam Now YYC, presented by Hidden Saigon is happening at The Prairie Emporium in Calgary.
- If you don’t mind an hour drive, you can see some pigs, cows, turkeys, and more at a tour of The Alice Sanctuary in Wheatland County.
- You can join a painting workshop and cuddle fuzzy birds at Color Cafe Calgary from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
Sunday, July 31
- The Calgary International Blues Festival ends on Sunday and started on Monday, July 25.
- The 10th annual Terminus Festival is at Dickens and ends Sunday, featuring industrial and electronic artists and bands from all over the world.
- You can catch Hamilton all weekend at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium until the last show on Sunday.
- The 2022 Calgary Cup World Water Skiers Overall Tour & The Silver Slalom Event‘s last day is on Sunday in Aldersyde, about a 45-minute drive south of the city, and it’s free to watch.
Monday, August 1, Heritage Day
- The annual Heritage Day Festival at Olympic Plaza is completely free and family-friendly.
- The Tour de Bowness Street Festival is back for its 10th anniversary, hosted by the Mainstreet Bowness Business Improvement Area (BIA).
- Incredible India Fest is at the The Westin Calgary Airport, with free parking and admission.
- Heritage Day celebrations are on at Fort Calgary from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission.
- The TELUS Spark Science Centre’s Luminarium exhibit ends on the holiday Monday.
- The Beltline Urban Murals Project (BUMP) Festival begins Aug. 1 and runs until Aug. 28.
