Calgary heat warning extends through long weekend

Calgary is still under a heat warning from Environment Canada heading into the Heritage Day long weekend.

Hot temperatures ranging from 29 degrees to the mid-30s are expected to stick around until early next week.

Overnight lows will range between 14 degrees to the high teens.

Environment Canada says heat warnings are issued when the hot weather increases the risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

The weather agency recommends trying to stay out of the sun as much as possible during a heat warning.

“We understand that people work outside, make their living outside, but if you’re going to be doing any strenuous activity outside, just make sure that you listen to your body,” said EMS spokesperson Adam Loria.

“Take frequent breaks in an air-conditioned, cool, or shaded place. It will help your body re-energize and maintain its regular temperature.”

Environment Canada echoes those recommendations, adding if you can manage it, go outside during the cooler hours of the day, take breaks from the heat often, and try to find a place with air conditioning where you can rest.

Never leave your child or pet in a closed vehicle for any amount of time, and remember to drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.

When a heat warning is issued, it’s important to keep an eye on yourself and others for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Symptoms include:

  • High body temperature
  • Lack of sweat
  • Confusion
  • Fainting
  • Unconsciousness

Environment Canada also says to pay attention to people who “can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat,” such as kids, seniors, people who work outside, or people with health conditions.
