Jasper National Park warns of extreme fire danger this long weekend

If you are heading out camping to Jasper, be careful because the National Park has upgraded its danger rating to the highest level.

Due to the extended days of heat, park officials set the rating to extreme.

Parks Canada says specialists are monitoring conditions including patrolling the area for wildfires, smoke, and illegal campfire closely and are ready to respond in the event of a wildfire.

The province does not allow open fires in Jasper National Park with the exception of fires being allowed in designated metal fire pits or boxes.

Camp goers can help by not lighting campfires outside designated fire pits or carelessly discarding cigarettes.

Other advice given to prevent wildfires includes parking your car in the designated vehicle areas only as parking on the side of the road can accidentally ignite a fire by brushing up against the dry grass.

More information about the Jasper fire rating is available on the Parks Canada website.
