ASIRT investigating police use of force against man after Calgary city hall fires

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is working to determine whether the actions of Calgary Police Service officers were excessive when they dealt with a man who allegedly broke into city hall and set parts of it on fire this week.

Police were called to the building at around 4 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a break-in. When they got there, officers found a man inside with a large, bladed weapon.

After police tried to calm the man down, they ended up using what they refer to as non-lethal weapons to subdue him.

The Calgary Police K-9 Unit apprehended the suspect shortly after. EMS was also called to the scene.
