Calgary is under a heat warning from Environment Canada, and the hot weather is expected to stick around through the rest of the week.
The weather agency forecasts high temperatures between 29 and 34 degrees Monday, and while things should cool down a bit overnight and Tuesday, the heat will come back on Wednesday.
CityNews meteorologist Michael Kuss says it’s going to be a hot week.
“We are still in early August, and this is what we should be seeing, it’s above seasonal, but not unbearably so,” Kuss said.
He forecasts a high of 30 degrees for Monday afternoon and a high of 29 for Tuesday.
“We may see a few early morning showers Wednesday,” Kuss added. “Partly sunny on Thursday, chance for showers and cooler on Friday with a high of 26 which is still above average.”
Environment Canada says heat warnings are issued when the hot weather increases risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
The weather agency says to stay out of the sun if you can, and if you aren’t able to avoid it, try not to stay in the sun all day.
Environment Canada recommends going outside during the cooler hours of the day, taking breaks from the heat often, and trying to find a place with air conditioning where you can rest.
Never leave your child or pet in a closed vehicle for any amount of time, and remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
When a heat warning is issued, it’s important to keep an eye on yourself and others for symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Symptoms include:
- High body temperature
- Lack of sweat
- Confusion
- Fainting
- Unconsciousness
Environment Canada also says to pay attention to people who “can experience earlier or more severe effects from heat” such as kids, seniors, people who work outside, or people with health conditions.
