Calgary bobcat sightings surge

According to a local biologist, bobcat sightings have been on the rise in Calgary for ten years.

The City of Calgary is reporting a surge in bobcat activity, and some locals are growing concerned.

Brett Boukall, senior wildlife biologist for the Bow district, says the feral felines’ emergence didn’t happen overnight.

“We have been seeing observations increase within the city over the last probably 10 years,” Boukall said.

Boukall cites an element of human desensitization linked to the rise of bobcat sightings, adding one reason why these animals are growing more common is the prevalence of domesticated pets, such as cats and dogs.

“There’s very few encounters with people. However, with pets, that’s actually definitely a concern,” Boukall said. “They are a predator.”

Keeping a bobcat or similar predator away can be as simple as reducing the things that attract them — including other animals.

“Clean up your yard, make sure your garbage is put away, clean up your pet food. Clean up the fruit from your fruit trees,” Boukall said.

If you encounter a bobcat or another predator and are concerned for your safety, the city advises you call Fish and Wildlife at 403-297-6674.
