The City of Calgary say repairs to the Municipal Building will cost upwards of $1.3 to $2.2 million after an initial review by the city’s insurers.
This includes the emergency response that worked to put out fires and minimize damage, stabilization activity including temporary relocation of services. and restoration of the building, furniture, and equipment inside.
City hall was broken-in early morning on Aug. 2, where police report a man suffering from mental health issues is suspected of breaking in and setting small fires throughout the building. The water from the sprinklers also damaged the property.
Acting City Manager Carla Male says the water damage is excessive, and that it affected three levels of the Municipal building, including the equipment inside.
“While it will be many months before we know the final cost, our team has been working hard to assess the scope of the damage and work with the city’s insurer,” Male said.
The city says 80 per cent will likely be replaced by insurance.
