Calgary’s Alberta Junior Hockey League team — the Canucks — is ditching its blue and green colour scheme in favour of red and yellow.
The team’s old colours closely resembled those of the Vancouver Canucks.

Brad Moran, head coach and general manager of the Calgary Canucks, tells CityNews the team had those colours because the Calgary Flames didn’t exist yet.
“When [the team] originally arrived in Calgary, the closest NHL team was the Vancouver Canucks, thus the Calgary Canucks,” Moran said.
The rebrand was a secret that was even kept from the players. It comes on the heels of the Wranglers, Calgary’s AHL team, announcing its new name, and starting its search for a new mascot.
“The City of Calgary is more of a red and yellow. And obviously, the Flames, Stampeders, and many other things are red,” Moran said.
“It’s very ‘Flames colours’ I guess you could say.”
He adds the rink has also been transformed to reflect the new red and yellow colour scheme.
“Hopefully it resonates a little bit more with Calgarians, as the only Junior A team now in town,” Moran said.

The new jerseys will be unveiled during the team’s opening home game on Sept. 17, and the Canucks are still waiting for new merchandise to come in.
“For us, it’s about having those ties with the community. It’s a community-owned team — non-profit — that gives Calgarian hockey players, ideally, a place to continue junior hockey,” Moran said. “We’d like to have that community support.”
