Tiny birdhouses are popping up in various parts of Downtown Calgary.
A locally based Calgary artist, Christine Bolcsfoldy, is behind this initiative.

“It’s like broken window theory, if you see people taking care of an area, other people will be more motivated to look after it as well,” said Bolcsfoldy.
With a mission to beautify the city of Calgary, a local artist has installed tiny birdhouses along the seventh avenue.
“I would really like to make downtown Calgary a more welcoming place for everyone, I know a lot of people feel uncomfortable or a little bit tense.”
“I started last year by decorating the planters, putting some seeds and plants to make the block look a bit more welcoming.
And once I reached the extent of that, it seemed a natural thing to move on to making the trees more decorative and making it a more happy, friendly place for everyone,” said Bolcsfoldy.

So what goes behind making one of these birdhouses?
“I had pre-purchased birdhouses, just a basic shell that I have worked on, I have used everything from popsicle sticks to natural materials like moss and bark, wood veneers, piper cleaners, yarn, a lot of paint, paint is the main part of it. And there is definitely going to be more material in the ones coming up, just giving each one its own theme.”
These tiny birdhouses by Christine have created a lot of buzz on the online community pages. The artist now plans to expand this initiative to other bird-loving Calgarians.
“I have been talking with some people in the local art community, we were discussing hosting an event coming up, maybe a Wednesday night when people could come in and paint their own birdhouses to expand it to other parts of downtown.”
If you happen to walk around 7th Avenue in Downtown Calgary, don’t forget to spot these tiny birdhouses.
