Albertans can book COVID-19 boosters for kids 5-11 on Monday

Starting Monday Aug. 29, parents and guardians can book appointments for their children aged five-to-11 years old to get a COVID-19 booster shot.

Health Canada approved Pfizer’s booster vaccine for children aged five-to-11 on Aug. 19.

It is currently the only available booster shot for kids in that age group in Canada.

Health Minister Jason Copping says the approval came just in time for the upcoming school year.

“Within days, we will begin offering booster doses and help provide ongoing protection from COVID-19, especially as our kids return to the classroom,” Copping said.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw says children that are immunocompromised are especially encouraged to get the shot as soon as possible.

“Vaccines remain one of the most important layers of protection we can access for ourselves and our children,” Hinshaw said. “This booster dose is an important option for families, especially those who have children with medical risk factors.”

The province adds that 51 per cent of children aged five-to-11 have gotten at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
