Calgary gas prices are varying throughout the city, and it may leave motorists wondering where they should fill up.
From the location of the station to the ownership, many factors play when determining the gas prices at the local pump.
Concordia University economics professor Moshe Lander says its all driven by economics, adding that “Its not like these gas stations are randomly picking prices now.”

Lander says that while the options for gas are expensive as a whole, it can still prove beneficial to seek cheaper locations.
“You’re not necessarily buying the cheapest price, but you are finding a cheaper price, and over the course of a year that can add up to some substantial savings.”
The current price for regular petrol in Calgary ranges from 127.9 to 138.9 cents per liter. Calgarians say they’re finding cheaper prices nearby at First Nation and Costco pumps, with them at the lowest price.
“I just drive this road a lot and I noticed how cheap it was and needed gas today, so I filled up,” said one woman to CityNews.
Another man say they were in the area, “Because I am in the neighborhood, and the First Nations pump is one of the lower cost ones next to the Costco, and that one is quite busy.”
For those wondering why the city does not have a standardized gas price, economists like Lander says that kills competition.
“If you start putting in price controls, especially in Alberta, it’s political suicide, but it’s also bad economics. Let these gas stations distinguish themselves,” Lander said.
“Maybe you want the shortest line in which case you pay for the premium. Maybe you want the cheapest price in which case you have to be prepared to wait for it. So let them compete and lets not have standardized pricing.”
As gas prices fluctuate, those looking for a bargain should keep a keen eye out for cheaper gas stations. And it seems driving around is not the only way to find better deals.
“If it does bother consumers, there are ways around it. I know of a website that will list gas prices. I can also look for where is gas the cheapest and it will highlight that these are the prices at various stations,” Lander said.
CityNews Calgary has a gas tracker, and Gas Buddy is also recommended for those looking to save on gas.
