Do Calgarians plan on watching the Queen’s funeral service?

It’s been 10 days since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and mourners from across the world will be tuning in to watch the funeral service for the longest reigning monarch in the world.

However, do Calgarians plan on taking part in the memorial?

“Maybe the whole city will watch it. Who knows?” one Calgarian told CityNews.

“The royal family is a figurehead sort of, and the Queen was well respected, but I’ve got other things to do with my time,” another man responded.

Another Calgarian said they are open to watch it, adding “I’m gonna watch it cause I think, well she’s special, she’s been the monarch for I think 70 years or more.”

Some people said they’re burnt out from the constant Royal coverage.

“I just simply am not interested in the monarchy, but I mean I’m sorry that this great person has passed on but yeah there’s a lot of hype, and it’s too much, it’s overwhelming the actual news,” another person said.

“Just not really that interested. I think the Royal family has caused a lot of issues in the world, but yeah, just not really something for me,” said someone else.

Some believe younger generations don’t feel as connected to the monarchy, saying they haven’t paid attention to the Royals for decades.

“I used to live in the UK, but I mean, I kinda left around the time Princess Diana died, so that was kinda a big story for us. We saw it like everywhere in Canada and back there too,” someone commented.

Some people say while they respect the late Queen, they don’t like what she represents, such as “people where I’m from, Ireland, or people like India, we’ve been suffering for 800 years of oppression, we’re not gonna be out here mourning the death of the Queen … not that she did anything specifically to us, but its what she represents, the Royal family, the monarchy.”

The government of Alberta invites all Albertans to participate in an outdoor ceremony on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the Alberta Legislature grounds to honour Queen Elizabeth II.

The ceremony will take place regardless of the weather say government officials.

People planning on attending the ceremony are asked to be prepared to hear loud noises and recommends using ear protection.

They are also encouraged to use public transportation as there will be no parking available, but there will be a drop-off zone for people with mobility issues off 107 Street at the east gate to the Alberta Legislature.

People with pets are asked to leave them at home.

CityNews will have extensive coverage of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, Sept. 19 — 3 a.m. MST — across all platforms with special correspondent Lisa LaFlamme and a team of reporters in Canada as well as in London. Find more information at citynews.ca.
