Calgarians who live in large residential buildings of four stories or more will soon be eligible to buy a parking permit, called a market permit, to park on roads within 150 metres of their building.
Calgary city council approved the new permit Tuesday Sep. 13, and say it will be in effect by the end of the year.
The city adds creating parking availabilities for people helps them manage their transportation needs and parking costs.
“We want to encourage off-street parking as the primary choice for residents living in residential parking zones,” said interim General Manager for the Calgary Parking Authority Chris Blaschuk. “And at the same time, we recognize there are unique circumstances. Residents living in large multi-residential buildings may require specific parking needs that cannot otherwise be accommodated off-street. The introduction of the market permit will provide these residents with an option.”
The city says the cost of the parking permit will be similar to other parking options in the city with a subsidized rate and fair entry for people with low income.
It will also be put on the table for approval in November as part of the 2023-2026 Business Plan and Budget.

The city says their primary goal is to manage street parking demand rather than generate income, and the potential profits from this program will be used to cover operating costs.
People who buy the market permit will be able to benefit from convenient parking in areas that have non-residential parking needs.
“The recent policy changes to street parking around large multi-residential buildings will largely benefit residents with greater availability of short-term parking for loading, deliveries and for visitors,” said Peter Oliver, president of the Beltline Neighbourhoods Association.
The city says parking spots help Calgary’s entire transportation system as it contributes to improving traffic flow for people who walk, drive, bike, or use public transportation.
