Road rage incident leads to seizure of over 40 guns by RCMP

A Calgary man was arrested following a road rage complaint on Highway 1 two weeks ago, which led police to seize more than 40 guns from his home.

Strathmore RCMP says the incident was on Sept. 10, when they got a call from someone saying a driver flashed a handgun at them.

Officers were able to pull over the vehicle, where they found the handgun and a shotgun inside.

RCMP arrested two men, but the passenger was released soon after, while the driver remained in custody.

Police say they got a warrant to search the driver’s home because of the “erratic and dangerous behaviour” in this incident, and that’s where they recovered the other weapons.

About half of them, 22 in all, were long guns consisting of shotguns, rifles, and air rifles, but officers add they found an AR-15 and 20 handguns. In total, 49 firearms were seized.

Trevor Hauck, 51, from Calgary faces one charge of pointing a firearm, and several offences surrounding the unsafe storage of guns.

“The alleged details in this matter is not representative of responsible gun ownership and was unsafe for all involved. It is fortunate nobody was harmed. Public safety is of paramount importance which was the driving factor in the immediate response and subsequent search of a residence to prevent further offences. The charges and disposition of the seized firearms from this point will be decided by the courts,” S. Sgt. Mark Wielgosz said in a statement.

Hauck was released and is set to appear in court at a later date.
