Calgary-filmed The Last of Us teaser trailer released by HBO Max

The first full-length trailer for the long-awaited HBO series The Last of Us, which was shot in and around the city of Calgary, and Alberta has been released.

The series, which is based on the best-selling, critically-acclaimed PlayStation videogame of the same name, is the most expensive film or television production shot in Canada.

It appears one scene from the new trailer was shot on Airport Trail NE at the tunnel just west of 36 Street NE in Calgary.

Some fans on the r/Calgary subreddit seem to think another scene was shot at the Canmore Engine Bridge in Canmore, Alta., which is just over an hour drive from Calgary.

Many, including Premier Jason Kenney, have drawn comparisons from The Last of Us to another widely-popular HBO show, Game of Thrones — in terms of its scale, budget, and ambition.

The new footage has been met with overwhelmingly positive reception from fans, with tweets describing the trailer as “incredible” and “amazing.”

Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian) and Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) are playing the lead roles.

Pascal told James Corden some scenes were shot in Edmonton, although it’s unclear from the trailer whether any Edmonton locations are visible.

Previous footage was revealed in a trailer promoting several series coming to HBO’s streaming service, HBO Max. That trailer gave Calgarians their first look at Pascal’s character, Joel, and Ramsey’s character, Ellie, as well as Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) in a guest role as the character Bill.
